Saturday Team Match Reports

13/09/08 – First home game of the season for Westend Saturday against Thornton Heath and they ran out comfortable winners on the day by 3 goals to 1 with goals from Cavozzi, Purssey and Goff.

20/09/08 – Another solid home performance from Westend saw them win this game by a convincing 6 goals to nil against Dynamo Pimlico who struggled to come to terms with the relentless pressure put on them by the home side. Goals from Mike Barbato 2, Luxford, Barrett, Purssey and Morgan sealed the win.

27/09/09 –  Despite going down to two early goals from Chipstead FC in this County Cup fixture, Westend soon found their form and bounced back with five goals from Morgan, Purssey, Barbato, Cross and Cunliffe to see them safely into the next round. (Result won 5 – 2)

04/10/08 – Westend were bundled out of this game by a very strong and robust Hersham side that run out winners by 3 goals to 1. This was despite a very spirited performance in the second half from the away team and although Cavozzi pulled a goal back just after half time it was just one of those days and try as they may, Westend couldn’t pull back the 3 goal deficit.

11/10/08 – Teck Senior Cup 1st round – Westend claimed the scalp of Premier side Robin Hood in this hard fought cup game winning by 3 goals to 2.  The score line suggests that it was a fairly close game, in reality it was a very convincing win that should have amounted to many more goals and this would have given more justice to the end result. Goals from Carne, Cunliffe and Luxford ensured the win.

18/10/08 – A tough game against the league leaders ended with a 2 - 1 defeat for Westend despite a hard fought encounter against a strong Old Ruts side. A goal from Carne early in the second half put the home team one up against the opposition but Ruts kept chipping away and pulled the deficit back within minutes. The away team scored the winner against the run of play in the 70th minute to secure the win.

25/10/08 – Away vs Reed FC – County Cup Round 2 – Westend were drawing 1 – 1 at full time and forced the game into extra time, even after the extra 30 minutes being played the score line still remained at 1 goal apiece. The result was finally decided on penalties and Reed FC held their nerve to secure a very narrow win.

01/11/08 – Opponents Esher United were much too strong for Westend in this Division 1 encounter.  On a day when the game was played in torrential rain and high winds it was Esher who adapted themselves to the heavy pitch conditions and were eventual winners by 4 goals to 1.

08/11/08 – This Teck Cup 2nd Round match went all the way to the wire with Westend eventually coming out on top after playing an added 30 minutes of extra time. The scoring went like a see-saw with Alex Purssey scoring first, Premier side SHFC then levelled to make it 1 – 1, SHFC soon added a second goal to make it 2 – 1. The home team then bounced back with Ben Couchman grabbing the goal that took the tie into extra time. A pulsating game was erupting and it was Purssey who scored again to make it 3 – 2 and with the minutes ticking away Mike Barbato made it 4 – 2. SHFC came back again to score a third goal and a nervous finish ensued, the nerves were finally calmed when the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the game.

03/01/09 – The home side kept up the pressure on the league leaders with a convincing 5 – 1 victory over Westside. The game played at Westend Common was touch and go as some of the pitch was frozen but thankfully the referee allowed the match to go ahead. Westend were soon in their stride and adapted well to the conditions with goals coming from Purssey 2, Couchman, Cross and Cunliffe sealing the win.

10/01/09 – No game scheduled

17/01/09 - In a tough away match to Esher Utd, Westend came out on top winning by 2 goals to 1. Two Westend players sent off and there were various other yellow cards shown to both sides during the game, despite the sending offs the game was played in the right spirit throughout and goals from Purssey and Wyatt with a 35 yard belter of a free kick sealed the win.

28/03/09 – Westend fielded an under strength team against Old Rutlishians and although they battled hard the result went against them with a 3 – 0 loss.

04/04/09 – Away vs Wandsworth Corinthians – Drew 1 – 1.
