WEDNESDAY 09th MAY 07

VS ROYAL ADMIRAL (League)

Westend lose in last game of season

In the final game of the season played last Wednesday evening, Westend fielded a makeshift team against Admiral FC and were subsequently beaten by 7-0.

Although the score line shows as an absolute route, Westend gave good account for themselves and were beaten by a very strong Admiral team.

Due to the game being played midweek, Westend struggled to field a full side due to either players being unavailable or having other commitments.

As it was, the away side had to start the match with only 10 players and even had to utilise the services of Manager, Keith Harris in the starting line up.

Keith dug out his boots and made his team debut as a makeshift centre forward and was still full of running at the end of the 90 minutes.

By half time Westend were already 5-0 down and the fact that that Admiral only managed to score twice in the second half was down to the sheer tenacity and hard work by the away team.

Regardless of this result, Westend still finished in a creditable 3rd position in the league and despite some highs and lows it has been an excellent season, the team have played some really entertaining football and the squad have much improved as the season has progressed.

The club are looking forward to next season and are hoping to improve on their league position and maybe win a bit of silverware for the trophy cabinet.

Team: Pegler, Bishop, Blackburn, Ayley, Rideout, Goddard, Smurthwaite, Johnstone, Andersson, Tait, Harris

SUNDAY 29th APRIL 07

VS WARREN MEAD (League)

Westend hold on for draw

Westend played out a 1-1 draw with Warren Mead on Sunday.

Although Westend dominated the first half and were a goal up by half time, for the second week running they failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck and were let down by poor finishing and a basic a lack of confidence in front of goal.

Despite playing some excellent football the away side only had one goal to show for all their hard work in the first half, it was left to Tait to finish off a fine move that started with an excellent long ball by Smurthwaite, the ball eluded the Warren Mead defence and dropped nicely for Tait who finished from close range.

The second half was a completely different story and it was the home side that took the advantage and just played Westend out of the game.

Again, if it wasn’t for poor finishing shown by the Warren Mead strike force the game would have shown a completely different result.

As it was, Westend were consistently camped out in their own half for much of the second period and Warren Mead equalised with a well taken headed goal from an inch perfect pass played in from the right side of play.

On reflection of the whole game a 1-1 draw just about seemed the right result on the day.

Westend have just one more league game to play and with the draw last week and the resulting draw this week, it all but finishes the last remaining hope of finishing as runners up in the league. Today’s result will guarantee 3rd place which will stand the side in good stead for next season’s campaign.

SUNDAY 22nd APRIL 07

VS KINGS ARMS FC (League)

Westend leave it late!

Westend could only manage a 1- 1 draw with Kings Arms FC in a game played out in sweltering temperatures on Sunday.

Despite all their efforts and missed chances in the first half, Westend found themselves a goal down just before half time when against the run of play, Kings Arms scored when a miscued shot sent goalkeeper Wade the wrong way, the keeper tried to recover but the ball trickled over the line.

The second half was much the same as the first with Westend applying all the pressure, they should have made much more use of their superiority but were let down on numerous occasions by poor finishing.

Stand in keeper Wade, making his first appearance in goal due to a shoulder injury to Pegler made good account for himself in the second half when he pulled off a string of fine saves to keep Westend in the game.

With the minutes ticking away and the likelihood of a goal looking remarkably slim, Westend played their final card, a long ball was played into the Kings Arms area where after a melee of miss kicks and a rugby tackle on Goddard the ball ran through to Tait who collected the ball and was able to score with ease. The goal was timed with 90 minutes on the clock.

There was barely time to re-start the game and the referee who had a fine game blew the whistle for full time.

SUNDAY 15th APRIL 07

VS OLINDA FC (League)

Westend win by 5-3

Westend entertained Olinda FC in this Division 3 League clash played at Westend Common.

After last week’s fine result against Royal Admiral that resulted in a 2-2 draw, this week’s game was played out on a hard bumpy surface with bizarre temperatures that could be more attributed to a game being played in August rather than Mid April and contributed to a lack lustre game that saw the home side run out winners by 5-3.

The game was a struggle for both sides and it was difficult to come to terms with the heat and the conditions, some of the football was neat at times but neither side was able to find the cutting edge and take control of the game.

Westend went into an early when Tait seized on to an opportunity after some sloppy defensive work that allowed him to score with ease.

The away side then clicked into gear and scored twice to go in at half time with a 2-1 lead, at this stage of the game Westend were struggling to find any kind of form.

Once the second half got under way the home side tried to get their game going and were rewarded five minutes after the re-start when Johnstone pounced to level the score at 2-2.

Rideout scored the third goal after Goddard supplied a superb cross from the right that found him unmarked in the box; he planted a firm header into the back of the net to make it 3-2.

Westend finally put a gap between them and the away side when Johnstone picked up the ball on the left, jinked past a couple of defenders and then laid the ball across goal, the ball ran through to Andersson on the right and he slid the ball home for 4-2.

Olinda not to be outdone stormed back and scored a great goal, they won a corner on the right and with the resulting kick the ball was played in to the near post, Westend failed to pick up the loose players and Olinda scored with a well taken header.

Five minutes from time Steve Johnstone wrapped up the points after he seized onto a loose ball to make it 5-3.

SUNDAY 08th APRIL 07

VS ROYAL ADMIRAL (League)

Westend gain fine draw against in form Admiral 2-2

Westend produced one of their best performances of the season and shared the points with in form team Royal Admiral in Division 3. Of the Leatherhead & District Football League.

In the first game played on Westend Common since all the flooding caused major problems to the ground, the home side played out a fine 2-2 draw with high flyers Royal Admiral in this top of the table league encounter.

The game was evenly balanced throughout the game and it was Admiral who went into a 1-0 lead early on in the first half after some fine build up work, this was more that they deserved as they had already had a goal disallowed by the linesman for offside and had already gone close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions.

Westend, who were without top scorer Tait for this game had to re-shuffle the formation slightly and played Goddard and Quddus up front, this lively duo certainly made the Admiral rear guard work hard and caused them plenty of problems with their attacking pace and ability to move the ball around quickly.

The home side were rewarded just before half time when Goddard found himself in a bit of space after some fine inter passing play, the ball was worked through to him and he volleyed in the equaliser just minutes before the half time whistle.

After the re-start it was Westend who went into a 2-1 lead, the goal came after a goalmouth scramble that the Admiral defence failed to deal with, the ball richoted around the goalmouth and finally fell to Westend defender Blackburn racing in from the right and he smashed the ball through a ruck of players, the unsighted keeper got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Westend however, failed to capitalise on the lead and relaxed their grip on the game when due to some poor marking they allowed the away side to break away and score an easy second goal.

Side could have snatched the win in the final minutes of the game and Westend came closest when they had the ball in net, the joyous celebrations were cut short when the referee disallowed the goal for a very dubious offside decision.

The 2-2 result still keeps Westend in touch with the league leaders and with five games to play are currently in third position in the league.

SUNDAY 01st APRIL 07

VS ELMBRIDGE EAGLES (League)

WESTEND Just scrape home

Compared with last’s week cracker of a game, Westend were brought back to earth with a bump this week against Elmbridge Eagles in a Division 3 league clash played at Old Tiffs Sports Ground in Molesey.

Although the result went the right way in the end with the away side grinding out a win by 2-1, it was a game that was riddled with errors and not a pretty game of football, this win was ground out by sheer hard work and endeavour to keep them in touch with the league leaders.

At the half time whistle, Westend were leading 1-0 with a well taken goal from Tait after he ran onto a though ball that bounced over the Eagles keeper and allowed him to run the ball into an empty net.

The conditions on the day didn’t help to make this an easy game for either side and the strong winds played havoc for both teams, this was evident when a hopeful toe poke from an Elmbridge forward bounced in front of Westend keeper Pegler, the strong wind took the ball over his head and ended up in the back of the net to level the scores at 1-1.

Westend ploughed on and went looking for the winner, they were rewarded when a long free kick from Pegler at the back was carried forward by the wind; Tait latched onto it and rifled the ball into the back of the net to secure the points and give the away side the all important win.

Manager, Keith Harris said after the final whistle that this was a must win game for us, although this wasn’t  the prettiest game to watch the result keeps us in touch with the team at the top and at the end of the day it’s the 3 points that are important no matter how badly you play.

Team:Pegler, Bishop, Russell, Adkins, Rideout, Goddard, Winn, Smurthwaite, Johnstone, Tait, Wade

Man of the match: Russell

Scorer: Tait 2

SUNDAY 25th March 2007

VS EPSOM RANGERS (League)

Westend Draw with League Leaders 2-2

This really was a game of two halves and each team contributed to a fascinating match that saw Epsom win the first half by a long shot, they were in command and leading by 2-0 at the interval and were seemingly coasting the game.

Westend though, were not to be outdone and came back magnificently in the second half, had it not been for some wasted chances and the woodwork saving the visitors, the home side could have come away with a comfortable win.

As it was the 2-2 result was a fair reflection of the game and both Managers can be proud of the way the players fought out this contest.

Westend’s top scorer Tait scored both goals, the first one when he was put clean through and with only the goalkeeper to beat he finished off the move with a crisply taken goal.

Tait’s second goal was an absolute stormer, watch out Beckham was the cry as Westend were awarded a free kick on the right about 2 yards outside the Epsom box.

The rereree moved the opposing players back ten yards, Tait then took a slight run up to the ball and smashed an unstoppable volley into the back of the net to bring the scores level.

Despite various attempts by both sides to grab the winner, the game finished with honours even and the points shared.

Team: Pegler, Ayley, Russell, Adkins, Goddard, Andersson, Smurthwaite, Johnstone, Rideout, Holloway Tait - Subs not used: Wade, Bishop

Man of the match: Pegler

SUNDAY 11th MARCH 2007

Vs WORCESTER PARK (League)

Westend win 5-1 despite fielding makeshift team.

Westend bounced back from the 5-0 defeat by Avenue FC last week and secured all 3 points with a comfortable but scrappy away win against Worcester Park Athletic.

The conditions for today’s game were ideal, but due to all the recent rain the pitch at Grand Drive was very rutted and it made it very difficult at times to control the ball.

The game didn’t start off that well and it was Westend who found themselves 1-0 down with just over 15 minutes on the clock.

The away side got themselves back into game with a well taken goal by Tait who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and finished superbly.

Westend soon took the lead and this time it was Holloway, who finished off a fine individual effort when he cut in from the left and unleashed a left footed drive that flew into the back of the oppositions net.

It took Westend ten minutes to get back into there stride after the second half got under way, they were rewarded with there perseverance and hard work when the ball was threaded through to Tait who struck the ball with venom from just inside the box to make it 3-1.

After the best passing move of the game that started from the back with defenders Russell and Bishop involved, Bishop then worked the ball out to Goddard on the right and he scored with ease to make it 4-1, the scoring was completed when Quddus volleyed in from the edge of the area to make it 5-1, Quddus who was home on holiday from University had returned to the side for his first game since September last year.

Westend have no game scheduled for next Sunday 18th March and return to league action when they play Epsom Rangers in a top of the table clash at West End Recreation Ground on Sunday 25th March – KO 10.30AM

Team: Pegler, Bishop, Russell, Rideout, Andersson, Johnstone, Winn, Quddus Goddard, Holloway, Tait (Wade)

Man of the match: Andersson

Scorers: Tait 2, Goddard, Holloway, Quddus

SUNDAY 04th MARCH 2007

vs AVENUE FC (League)

Westend suffered their heaviest league defeat of the season and lose 5-0 to Avenue FC in top of the table clash.

This was a must win game for the club to maintain their position at the top of the table, unfortunately this wasn’t to be and Westend were beaten for the first time in the league since September 2006.

Although chances came and went, this wasn’t to be our day and although we battled hard against a very well organised team the final result says it all.

This result puts Westend down into 3rd position in the league, but with games to play the championship title is still very much up for grabs.

Westend’s injury woes continued when in the firsf half of the game, Captain Paul `Blackie’ Blackburn suffered a serious ankle injury and had to be carried from the field of play, the injury is likely to keep him out for the rest of the season, another ankle injury in the second half to midfielder Stevo Johnstone could put him out of action for a few weeks.

Team: Pegler, Bishop, Blackburn, (Goddard) Ayley, Rideout , Johnstone, (Briley) Russell, Perry, Winn, Holloway, (Wade) Tait

Man of the match: Ayley

SUNDAY 25th FEBRUARY 2007

VS BROCKHAM GREEN

WESTEND LOSE IN CUP GAME

On Sunday Westend travelled away to play against Brockham Green in the Intermediate Cup Round 2.

Although Brockham are top of Division 2 and are unbeaten so far this season, it was Westend who were the much better side in the first 45 minutes and were playing some excellent and fluent football.

The score stood at 1-0 at half time and Westend should have deservedly been in front by an even bigger margin had it not been for some missed chances, a disallowed goal by Perry and one pile driver of an effort by Tait that the keeper managed to save on the line at the second attempt which could have had a big influence on the game.

Westend’s goal came after about 30 minutes of the match and it was Robin Tait, their top scorer who scored with a well struck drive that sizzled into the bottom corner of the net to give the away side a well deserved lead.

Ten minutes into the second half and despite their domination Westend were struck a cruel blow when a cross from the left was met by Ayley’s head, the ball deflected into the net for an own goal to give the home side an undeserved equaliser.

Although the second half continued at a frantic pace with many near misses from both sides, it was Brockham who made the breakthrough and scored to make it 2-1 to give them the advantage and with there tails up they scored a third goal to make the game safe and run out winners by 3-1.

Westend play Avenue FC in a top of the table league clash at Coronation Rec. Hersham on Sunday 04rd March – KO 10.30am.

Team: Pegler, Winn, Blackburn, Ayley, Rideout, Andersson (Wade) Russell (Bishop)

Perry, Johnstone, Tait, Holloway

Man of the match: Blackburn

SUNDAY 11th  FEBRUARY 2007

vs EPSOM UNITED - League

Westend continued their good run of league form with an excellent win over Epsom United by 9-0.

Although the score line suggests a whitewash, it still took the home side 25minutes to score the first goal, an opponent pushed Holloway from behind and the referee awarded a penalty that was put away by Tait after sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Steve Johnstone volleyed the second goal on 33 minutes from just inside the box, although the keeper got a hand to it, he couldn’t prevent the shot from going in.  Johnstone’s celebrations were a sight to be seen!!

Tait scored a fine individual goal on the 35minute and the home side were now playing some excellent football and cutting through the Epsom defence with ease.

Westend then scored an excellent goal, it started from a throw out by Pegler to Rideout on the left, the ball was quickly moved on to Blackburn who raced down the touchline and whipped in an excellent cross that Tait latched onto and the ball flew into the net to make it 4-0.

On the 47th minute this time it was Tait who turned provider and played in Holloway who went on and tucked the ball under the advancing keeper.

The home side were now buzzing and after some fine passing the ball was played to Holloway who threaded an inch perfect pass through for Tait to run onto, Tait hit the ball first time on the run and scored an unstoppable volley for a 6-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the next goal to come and after 59 minutes the ball was played through to Goddard on the right, Goddard took the ball on and found Holloway who was unmarked in the area and he coolly finished with a well taken goal after 59 minutes.

Westend were now rampant and pushed forward relentlessly, this nearly proved disastrous as the away side had a few chances to get on the score sheet, fortunately they didn’t take their chances and the score remained at 7-0.

Tait then scored his 5th goal of the game after a defensive mix up after 67 minutes, he won the ball and although he was almost on the by-line he somehow managed to squeeze the ball into the net from the tightest of angles.

On the 80th minute, Perry picked up the ball in midfield, took the ball on a few strides and unleashed a volley that flew into the back of the oppositions net to make it 9-0.

Manager Keith Harris made two late substitutions and brought on Ayley in midfield and Rob Wade who was making his first appearance since coming back from a long-term injury.

This result maintains Westend’s position as league leaders.

Team: Pegler, Bishop, Blackburn Russell, Goddard, Andersson, Perry, Johnstone,

(Ayley) Rideout, Tait, Holloway (Wade)

Man of the match: The Team

Goalscorers: Tait 5, Holloway 2, Johnstone, Perry

SUNDAY 04th FEBRUARY 2007

vs Kings Arms – League

Westend moved into top spot in the league when there opponents failed to field a full team for the fixture at Westend Recreation Ground.

According to league rules the minimum amount of players required to start a match is 8 players, Kings Arms only turned up with 7 so the game was forfeited and Westend  were automatically awarded the 3 points and a home win to give them the coverted top spot.

SUNDAY 28th JANUARY 2007

vs Ditton RBL - League

Westend Boys win 5 - 2

Westend continued with their impressive league form from last Sunday’s game against Worcester Park, which they won 7-0.

The home side played against Ditton RBL who are currently lying bottom of the league and ran out winners on the day by 5 goals to 2.

The opening goal came virtually from the kick off and was scored by Holloway, the ball was played through to him and he coolly tucked the ball under the advancing keeper.

Upon checking with the referee, the goal was timed at 24 seconds and this was just the start that Westend needed, but despite sustained pressure on the Ditton goal and many missed chances, the game had to wait until the 25 minute for the second goal and it was scored by top goalscorer Tait.

From then on the home side relaxed their grip on the game and allowed Ditton to score just before the half time break to make the scoreline 2-1.

After the re-start, Westend upped the tempo and it was that man Tait who scored a brilliant individual goal when he carved his way through the Ditton backline and slid the ball underneath the keeper to make it 3-1.

Richard Ayley then got on the score sheet when he finished off a good move down the right, the ball was crossed into the goalmouth and defender Ayley got the final touch to steer the ball into the net.

Westend were then awarded a free kick for a foul on Tait just outside the area, Russell took the resulting kick and floated the ball over the wall and into the top left hand corner of the net before the keeper had chance to move to make it 5-1 to the home side.

Ditton scored a consolation goal near the end with a well taken headed goal that looped over keeper Pegler to make the final score 5-2.

This result takes Westend up to second place in the league, they have a game in hand over the leaders which should they win would give them the top spot.

Team: Pegler, Winn, Blackburn, Ayley, Rideout (Bishop) Goddard, Smurthwaite, Russell, Johnstone (Andersson) Tait, Holloway

Man of the match: Smurthwaite

Goalscorers: Tait 2, Holloway, Ayley, Russell

SUNDAY 21st JANUARY 2007

vs Worcester Park Athletic - League

WESTEND win by 7 goals to nil

Westend were back in league action this weekend and entertained Worcester Park Athletic in a re-arranged fixture at West End Recreation Ground.

The game kicked off at a fairly brisk pace and due to the high winds that ripped across the pitch this wasn’t ideal conditions for playing football.

Despite the wind it was Westend who played the better football from the start and went ahead with a superb left footed volley from Perry after 12 minutes which nestled into the back of the net and left the keeper clawing at thin air.

Five minutes later Westend broke down the right and the ball was played to top goal scorer Tait on the edge of the area, Tait cut inside and unleashed a powerful drive into the top corner of the net giving the keeper no chance of saving.

Next it was Holloway, playing his first game since November who got on the score sheet; he was played through the middle with an inch perfect pass and coolly slotted the ball under the advancing keeper.

Westend kept up the pressure and made it 4-0 just before the break with a calmly taken goal from Tait.

After half time Westend continued to take the game to the opposing side and they soon went five up when Holloway seized onto the ball after a mix up in the Worcester Park defence and beat the keeper from close range.

Holloway then made way for Briley to come on as sub and add a fresh pair of legs up front, within minutes of this change Westend went six up when Tait broke down the left, and from the by-line hit a cross cum shot that eluded the goalkeeper, hit a defender and ended up in the back of the net to make it 6-0.

The best goal of the game came when the ball was played out by Westend keeper Pegler and after a series of passes the ball was played out to Goddard on the right, Goddard took the ball on and put in a great cross, Tait was on it in a flash and powered a bullet header into the back of the net to secure his hatrick and a win for Westend 7-0.

Team: Pegler, Johnstone, Blackburn, Ayley, Rideout, Goddard, Russell, Perry, Andersson, Tait, Holloway (Briley)

Man of the match: Steve Johnstone

Goalscorers: Tait 3, Holloway 2, Perry 1, Own Goal

SUNDAY 14th JANUARY 2007

WESTEND LOSE IN INTERMEDIATE CUP 4-1

Westend’s poor performance in the cup continued on Sunday when they lost 4-1 away to Division 2 side Afc Rhodrons in the Intermediate Cup.

Despite getting off to a good start and going into an early lead with a well taken opportunist goal scored by Anderrson, the game was put on its head when Rhodrons were awarded a hotly disputed penalty for handball in the 15th minute.

An opposition player upended Westend’s Captain Paul Blackburn in his own penalty box, the referee awarded a penalty when Blackburn landed on the ball and apparently touched the ball with his hand.

Rhodrons scored from the subsequent penalty and this seemed to have an adverse effect on Westend and their play went downhill from then on but they still came in at half time with the score level at 1-1 and still all to play for.

Despite a frank half time talk by Manager Keith Harris, Westend just didn’t seem to get going in the second half and weren’t able to raise their game enough to have any influence on the game.

Rhodrons scored another 3 goals to make the game safe and go through to the next round winning by 4 goals to 1.

AFC Westend are not scheduled for a game this Sunday 21st  but return to league action at home the following Sunday 28th when they entertain Epsom United.

Team: Pegler, Blackburn, Russell, Ayley, Winn, Johnstone (Rideout) Smurthwaite, Perry, Goddard (Briley) Tait, Andersson

SUNDAY 07th JANUARY – SURREY COUNTY CUP ROUND 3

AFC WESTEND LOSE IN COUNTY CUP 2-1

West End entertained Thornton Rovers FC from the Croydon & District League in the 3rd round of the Surrey Intermediate Cup on Sunday at West End Recreation Ground.

Despite playing on a very heavy surface this was an excellent cup-tie and played at a very fast and furious pace with lots of end-to-end football and plenty of goalmouth incidents to savour.

Thornton Rovers took the lead early in the first half with a well taken breakaway goal, Westend soon responded with top goal scorer Robin Tait lashing in a 25 yard drive to level the score at 1-1.

The second half proved to be more exciting than the first with both teams pushing for the winner, both teams came very close to scoring but the game had to wait until the 75th minute for the second goal and it was scored by Rovers to make it 2-1, despite this setback Westend battled on and came close to levelling the score in the dying minutes of the game.

Manager Keith Harris said after the game that although we lost, he could take a lot of positives from this match and was pleased with his team’s performance.

Westend’s next game is on Sunday 14th January away to AFC Rhodrons in the 2nd round of the Intermediate Cup.

Team: Pegler, Blackburn, Ayley, Adkins, Johnstone, Smurthwaite, Russell, Perry, Rideout (Andersson) Tait, Briley (Goddard)

SUNDAY 17th DECEMBER – LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE - INTERMEDIATE CHARITY SHIELD RND 1

AFC MUNTERS VS AFC WESTEND

In their first game since the 19th November The “WESTEND BOYS” travelled away to Dorking to play AFC Munters from Division 2 in the first round of the Intermediate Shield.

Despite being a bit rusty due to a recent run of cancelled games, AFC soon got into their stride and were 4-0 up by half time with goals from Tait 2, Johnstone and Smurthwaite.

At the start of the second half it was Munters who came out of the blocks first and scored a very quick goal to make it 4-1, Westend then bounced back and scored again to make it 5-1 through Johnstone.

The home side then scored another goal to make it 5-2, AFC struck back with a well taken goal by Goddard to make it 6-2, again the home side came back with another goal to make the score 6-3 from a free kick awarded by the referee for a disputable back pass, very near to the end of the game Tait raced away and scored a brilliant solo goal which gave him a well deserved hatrick and also earned him the man of the match award, a winning score line of 7-3 and a very impressive win for the “WESTEND BOYS”

Team: Pegler, Blackburn, Ayley, Adkins, Rideout, Andersson, Smurthwaite, Perry, (Winn) Johnstone, (Holloway) Tait, Goddard

Man of the match award: Robin Tait

Goalscorers: Tait 3, Johnstone 2, Smurthwaite, Goddard

SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER vs EPSOM DOWNS FC

SURREY INTERMEDIATE COUNTY CUP ROUND 2

A 13 GOAL THRILLER

Well what you can you write about the game that just about featured everything, it was exciting football from start to finish and a classic game of cup football played in exactly the right spirit by both teams and made up of goals from the sublime to the ridiculous!!

Both Managers must have been pulling their hair out as both defences were leaking goals left right and centre and the outcome of the match was only decided in an extra 30 minutes of extra time played.

The score line went like this, 1-0 to the home side, then 1-1, 2-1 to the home side, then 2-2, then it went 3-2 to the away side and that’s how it stayed till half time.

After half time it was the away side that took the advantage, they scored another 2 goals and went into a 5-2 lead, at that stage and with about 15 minutes to go you would have thought game over, but it wasn’t and after making 3 substitutions the home side pulled the score back to 5-5 with about 1 minute to go until full time.

This was exciting stuff and the AFC Westend Manager Keith Harris couldn’t quite believe that his side had gotten back into the match.

So onto extra time and it was the home side with their tales up who scored another 2 goals to go into a 7-5 lead, this is how it stayed until the final minute of the game when the away side scored another goal to make it 7-6 at the final whistle, a hard fought game with an exciting but unexpected win for the “WESTEND BOYS”

Team: Pegler, Bishop, (Smurthwaite) Blackburn, Ayley, Pollington, (Rideout) Andersson, Winn, Perry, Johnstone, Tait, Holloway, (Goddard)

Goalscorers: Tait 5, Goddard, Smurthwaite

Sunday 12th November vs Wilson’s FC - League

On a fairly mild November Sunday morning (Remembrance Sunday) the home side who are currently lying second in the league entertained Wilson’s FC who were a couple of positions below us.

Before the start of the game both teams were summoned to the centre circle by the referee and a two minute silence was carried out to remember and honour those people who lost their lives serving their country in war and conflicts.

The game started off at a very fast pace and it was Wilson’s who got into gear first and were the much stronger team and put Westend under a lot of pressure. It was end to end stuff but it was Wilson’s who created the better chances and hit the woodwork twice in the early stages of the game, one of these chances that hit the woodwork was due to a magnificent fingertip save from goalkeeper Nick Pegler who got his hand to the ball and pushed it onto the bar.

Midway through the first half it was Wilson’s who had been playing some really good football and had taken control of the game. They were causing all sorts of problems for the home side who were slightly off the pace and couldn’t seem to match the oppositions, height and aggression and the willingness to fight for the ball. This ended with the away side scoring the all important first goal 10 minutes before half time to go into a 1-0 lead.

The second half was a completely different story and after a half time substitution due to an injury to defender Lee Russell, Westend re-shuffled the team and it seemed to do the trick with Tom Smurthwaite being slotted into the centre back position and Neil Winn coming on into central midfield.

Westend now started to believe in themselve’s and started to play the kind of good football that they are capable of and took the game to the away side who seemed to go off the boil. It was now the home team that started to run the show.

Two more substitutions were made and the manager Keith Harris brought on Andersson and Johnstone in midfield and took off Goddard and Pollington and the fresh legs paid dividends as it was Westend who went on to score a magnificent  goal that was smashed in by Perry to make the score 1-1.

With three minutes to go Westend had the chance to sew up the game when Holloway was put clean through and with only the keeper to beat he tried to place the ball underneath the advancing keeper who chose the right way to dive and made the save with the ball cannoning of his legs.

That was the last chance of the game and the referee blew his whistle to end a very exciting match.
