Sunday 27th April vs
AFC Ashtead Res – (Away) – League
In the penultimate game
of the season Westend lost this game by 3 - 0.
This was a typical end of
season clash with neither side really taking the game by the scruff of the
neck, the game was littered by errors and this proved costly to the away side
when they let Ashtead score twice to lead at half time. After the break Westend did improve their performance but couldn’t
manage to pull the score back, Ashtead scored again to take the 3 points
and left Westend to ponder next season.

Sunday 20th April vs
Avenue FC – (Away) – League
Despite fielding a
weakened due to injuries and players unavailable, Westend
conjured up a remarkable 1 – 1 draw with high flying Avenue FC.
This was the icing on the
cake for the club to pull of an amazing result like this despite having the
odds stacked against them. From a layman’s point of view this definitely
was a game of two halves, Avenue just about shaved the first half and were
leading 1-0 at the interval, The game was completely turned on it’s head in
the second period and Westend stormed the Avenue
goal with chances going begging as the minutes ticked away. Man of the
match Darren Newman had a superb game, how one of his excellent crosses was
not finished off was a complete mystery and it was left until the 90th
minute with Winn scoring the all important equaliser
from close range.

Sunday 13th April vs
Ewell Lions – (Home) – League
Westend at last turned the screw and won convincingly by
6 goals to 0.
This was the day that we
had been waiting for; the home side turned in their most impressive
performance so far and completely mastered the opposition.
Although, the first goal
took a while to come, it was Robbie Tait that
started the ball rolling with a coolly converted penalty; by halftime Westend were 3 goals up after further strikes by Dodge
and Burden. The rich vein of form continued into the second half with more
goals from Smurthwaite, Burden and an own goal
scored by a Ewell defender after a great corner
from Burden caused havoc in the goalmouth.

Sunday 30th March vs
Surrey Wanderers – (Away) – League
Westend lost this thrilling game played on bog of pitch
by 3 - 1.
The away side produced
another great performance, unfortunately they just couldn’t hold onto their
one goal advantage thanks to a superb strike by Robbie Tait
in the 32nd minute. In the second half Wanderers piled on the
pressure and although Westend battled bravely
they simply ran out of steam.
If it wasn’t for the
heroics by keeper Pegler the score line could have been much different, he
pulled off some wonder saves to keep his side in the game. At the end
Wanderers took all 3 points with a well disciplined second half performance
and although Westend still created many chances
the ball just wouldn’t go in to secure the much needed victory.

Sunday 16th March vs
Skylarks – (Home) – League
Westend earned themselves
another point after they draw 3-3 with Skylarks.
After racing into a
comfortable half time lead, the home side were
pegged back in the second half by a determined effort by Skylarks, Westend should have won this game at a canter but they
allowed themselves to be drawn into a dogfight at the end and nearly threw
the game away. Thankfully the game ended all square, with points shared and
honours even.

Sunday 09th March vs
Whyglaze Wanderers – Cup
Well, when I say that Westend missed the bus this morning I wouldn’t be
exaggerating, This was an awful game apart from the first 10 minutes when
they gave good account for themselves and could have easily taken the lead.
That apart they were beaten comprehensively by an excellent Whyglaze side by 10 goals to1. If I try and go into the
reasons why we lost this game then I would be here until next Sunday trying
to explain. I think suffice to say that we came a very poor second, the
players will have to think long and hard at their individual performances
and try and come up a much better overall performance in the league game
next Sunday.

Sunday 02nd March vs
Skylarks (Away) League
Back to basics this
weekend for Westend although they still managed
to win this game by 5-3 and continue their winning ways. It was a game
marred by errors and the high winds managed to play havoc for both sides,
the away side did manage to play well in patches and went in at the break
with a 3 goal cushion thanks to an own goal after 5 minutes, a neat strike
from Goddard after 32 minutes and on 40 minutes, a long ball from Burden
found Dodge and before the ball even touched the ground, Dodge fired in a
super volley for the third goal. Just after the break Skylarks got
themselves back into the game to make it 3-1, after 50 minutes Dodge scored
again with another crisp volley to make it 4-1 and then on 55 minutes Westend were awarded a penalty and it was keeper Pegler
who raced from his area to take the penalty, calm as you like Pegler
smashed the ball into the net to make it 5-1 on 55 minutes. Skylarks were
then awarded a penalty of their own after a clumsy tackle by Burden to make
it 5-2 and they wrapped up the scoring on 75 minutes to make the final scoreline 5-3.

Sunday 24th February vs West
Park (Home) League
The game of the season
and Westend run out winners by beating top of the
league side West Park to gain an enthralling victory by 3 – 2.
Who are ya!! Who are ya!! was the cry
of the day as the league leaders were convincingly beaten by an inform Westend side who took the game to them from the start,
they were a goal up at half time thanks to a great run and cross from Johnstone on the right, the ball was met by Burden on
the run and he headed firmly into the net. Into the second half and the
score was doubled when Tait lobbed the keeper
after he had robbed the ball from a West Park
defender. Not too be outdone the away side clawed themselves back into the
game and scored twice in succession to level the scores at 2-2. The result
could have gone either way but it was Westend who
got the winner 8 minutes from time, a cross was put in from the right from
Burden, Perry rose like a salmon and back headed the ball into the far
corner of the net to earn a famous victory. This result means that Westend’s recent run has earned them 8 vital points and
they are now clear of the relegation zone.

Sunday 10th February vs Ashtead FC (Away) League
Congratulations to Westend
for picking up their first win of the season by a resounding 5 – 1. It took
a long time coming and the form was carried on from last week with a much
better all round team performance. Westend
dominated the first half and were 3-1 up at the break with goals from Perry
and Smurthwaite. Perry opened the scoring with a
superb volley, he then followed this up with another well taken goal, the
third goal came from a high cross from Dodge on the right and Smurthwaite finished off the move with a well taken
header. The away side continued to press in the second half and were
rewarded when substitute Tait’s perseverance paid off and he netted goal 4,
Burden scored the 5th goal when
he completely wrong footed the Ashtead goalie with a sweetly struck volley.

03rd February vs Bookham
FC (Home) League
At last Westend
produced the kind of form that saw them earn a very creditable 2-2 draw
against a Bookham side that had beaten them
convincingly earlier in the season. This was the old Westend,
bristling with confidence and fighting and scrapping for everything and
even though they went 1-0 down early in the game, as in past weeks they
didn’t let their heads drop and on the stroke of halftime were awarded a
penalty that was calmly stroked home by Goddard. The confidence continued
in the second half and when Smuthwaite broke
clean through he coolly lobbed the ball over the keepers head to make it
2-1. This was the way it stayed and just when you thought that it would be
the first win of the season, a well earned victory was snatched away from Westend with virtually the last kick of the match and Bookham equalised.

27th January vs Ewell
Lions (Away) League
This game played against a team that was
just one place above them in the league should have been Westend’s best chance to gain their first league win of
the season and move off the bottom of the league.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and although
technically Westend were a much better side, it
was mainly due to enforced errors that allowed the home side to take the
advantage and turn round at the half time break with a comfortable 3-0
lead. This was a case of de ja vu and they only
have themselves to blame for allowing themselves to be in this position, no
matter how hard they try and despite all their hard work and endeavour the team just cant seem to shake themselves
out of throwing games away. The second half was a lot better and saw Westend come close to scoring, but try as they may the
goals didn’t come and Ewell finally wrapped up
the game with 3 more goals to earn them a comfortable 6-0 win.

Sunday
13th January vs Surrey
Royals (Away) Cup
Westend won their first game of the season in this cup
fixture by 3 – 1.
This was more like the old team from last
season, full of fire and compassion and the will to win, right from the off
they were in attacking mode and came close to opening the scoring on
several occasions.
The breakthrough came just before half time
when Goddard fired in on the run for a 1-0 lead.
The rich vein of form continued in the
second half and Goddard scored a second goal when the ball was cleverly
threaded through to him and he coolly finished. After this goal, Westend sat back on their laurels and allowed the home
side to get back into game, this cost them dearly when they gifted Royals a
goal after a defensive error to make it 2-1.
Westend kept their nerves and after a fine passing move
the ball was played out to Tait who put in a low
cross, the ball made it’s way through to Dodge with his back to the goal,
he coolly flicked the ball up and hit an unstoppable shot past the bemused
keeper for an excellent goal and a winning score line of 3-1.

Sunday
06th January 2008 vs AFC Rhodrons (Home) League
This was a must win game but again Westend failed to come out of this fixture without a
win and ended up losing this league game by 5-1.
Unfortunately, it was the same old story
and Westend were slow out of the blocks, they
allowed themselves to be pulled apart at the back and in midfield and this
allowed Rhodrons to take control of the game and
they held a commanding 4-0 lead at half time.
A couple of substitutions were made by Westend just before half time to try and change the
pace of the game and Ayley and Rideout made way for Dodge and Andersson,
this made a big difference to the overall game in the second half with a
much better performance and although full back Blackburn scored with a
header to give Westend some hope it still wasn’t
enough and Rhodrons scored just near the end to
make the final score 5-1.

02nd December vs Goldsworth Park Rangers (Away) Cup
In an enthralling game played out in almost
monsoon like conditions at Goldsworth Park
Recreation Ground, it was the away side that got bogged down in the mud and
were beaten 4 – 0 by Rangers.
It was however, another convincing and hard
workmanlike performance from Westend and they
hope that they can take this form into next week’s fixture against AFC Ashstead in the league despite this loss.

25th November vs Ashstead FC (Home) League
On the day, Westend
were a much better team than the visiting side and
proved that when there backs are up against
the wall they can produce a very high standard of football, indeed this was
so in this match and in patches they were a cut above Ashtead but they
still ended up losing the match by 4-2. Westend
are missing an out and out goalscorer and this is
evident as most of the good moves from Westend
are either either breaking down in the middle of
the park or in front of goal and this is costing them dearly. This result
unfortunately keeps Westend at the foot of the
table and in the relegation zone even though they have games in hand.

11th November vs Hersham
Sports (Away) Cup
Westend undid all their hard work and good football from
the first half when they finally lost this cup tie by 2-0.
It looked odds on that Westend
would continue with their winning ways from last week, even though the side
was hard hit by injuries to some key players the team rose to the occasion
and played some of their best football of the season.
But, try as the may they couldn’t hit the
back of the net when it counted and Hersham
scored two late goals to seal the tie.

Although this was a
marked improvement on last week’s performance, Westend
still ended up losing this game by 6-2.
The home side were in
front twice with goals from Andersson and Tait but they capitulated in the second half due to
some enforced errors and slack marking that allowed Ashtead to take the
upper hand and run out convincing winners.
Unfortunately after a
sickening clash of heads, Westend lost top
striker Tait with a suspected broken jaw.

Westend squandered a 2 goal lead this Sunday to a lively Rhodrons team.
Despite being in command
in the first half Westend wasted endless
opportunities to increase their lead and allowed the home side back into
the game by gifting them two very sloppy goals.
Despite this setback the
away team got themselves back into the lead with a well taken penalty and
seemed to be in line for their first win of the season.
Rhodrons had other ideas and they were awarded a penalty
near the end to make the final score 3-3.

October vs Surrey
Wanderers (Home)
No game is easy in this league, this was proved in the
first half of the game at Westend where it was
the visitors who took the initiative right from the start and were very
unlucky to go into the break with a slender 1-0 lead despite giving the
home side the run around for the first 45 minutes.
In the second half it was a completely different story
and as the game progressed it was Westend who
clawed themselves back into the game, first it was Robbie Tait who scored a glorious equaliser,
then with their tails up the home side scored again soon after with the
best move of the game, this time it was Johnstone
who scored with a great header after a cross sent in from the left by Tait.
Unfortunately, after some slack marking the home side
allowed Wanderers back into the game and they scored to make it 2-2, Westend kept the momentum going and scored another
superb goal, this time it was Winn who got himself onto the score sheet not
long after coming on as sub to make it 3-2.
The away side came back again and just before the final
whistle scored a scrappy goal to make the final score 3-3.
