Sunday First Team Match Reports
14/09/08 – The first home game of the season and
Westend’s First team won an enthralling match against a strong and robust
Chessington side by 4 – 3 with goals from Joe Burden 2, Robin Tait and Tom Smurthwaite.
21/09/08 – Westend were away to Avenue FC and were
winning by a second half goal by Tait and looked as if they were going to
collect another 3 points.
Unfortunately, the away side tired late on in the
game and Avenue scored 2 very late goals to win the game by 2 goals to 1.
28/09/08 – This was a game that Westend will want
to forget as the score line was more like a rugby fixture rather than a
football match. Despite all the hard work that had been put in over the
past 2 weeks, it all went completely wrong from the start and AFC Rhodrons
on the back of two league defeats won the game at a canter by 10 goals to
1. It was sometimes like the siege of the Mafekin as shots and goals began
to pile up and the only consolation for Westend was when Wood scored with a
well taken volley.
05/10/08 – Away to Whyglaze Wanderers Intermediate
Cup – The game was defaulted by Whyglaze as they couldn’t fulfil the
fixture so Westend proceed into the next round.
12/10/08 – Sunday’s game vs Bookham FC saw Westend
win by a comfortable 5 goals to 0 and earn star striker Robin Tait the accolade of scoring all 5 goals
in this match. This was a remarkable
feat considering he injured himself in the first half and still capped of a
great second half with a brace of goals, one of these was a lob from just
inside the halfway line that somehow eluded the Bookham goalkeeper to end
up in the back of the net. This result was churned out by a fine all round
solid team performance and Westend need to take this positive attitude into
their next game.
19/10/08 – Westend travelled to Ewell to play
Whyglaze Wanderers in this division 2 clash and the honours finished even
with the score line at 1 – 1. This was despite dominating the second half
and peppering the home goal with shots that rained all over the place apart
from on target. It was left to Neil Winn to smash in an
absolute belter of a goal to level the score, unfortunately that was it and
the game ended up with the points shared.
26/10/08 – Home vs Jolly Gardeners
West Fulham
League County
Cup 2nd Round. This match was played out in terrible conditions
and the end result went the way of Jolly Gardeners who won the game by 7
goals to nil. There were some fine individual performances and one of note
was by Westend full back Stuart Dodge who
had a superb game to undoubtedly win the man of the match award.
02/11/08 – No Game
09/11/08 – Westend’s 1st eleven had a
very convincing win against bottom of the table side Ewell Lions by 5 goals
to 0. This win takes them up to fourth in the league and keeps them in
contention with the leaders. Goals from Wooldridge 2, Tait, Cooper and Hope
made sure that all 3 points went the way of the West Enders.
16/11/08 – Home Avenue FC – This game had to be
moved to Long Ditton Rec, Windmill Lane, Surbiton with a 10.30am kick off
due to an unplayable pitch at Westend Common.
Despite being put under extreme pressure
throughout the game by Avenue, Westend carried a slender 1-0 lead into the
second half courtesy of a well taken goal from Wooldridge. Unfortunately
they couldn’t capitulate on the score and allowed Avenue to get themselves
back into the game late on in the second half with a really scrappy goal to
make the final score 1 apiece.
23/11/08 – Away Molesey Dynamos – Intermediate
Challenge Cup 2nd Round – Match abandoned at half time due to
the weather – Match to be replayed.
30/11/08 – Westend’s First Team were completely
overwhelmed in this fixture against AFC Rhodrons on Sunday and could offer
little or no resistance in this inept performance. Rhodrons have now scored
no fewer than 21 goals in the 2 fixtures against Westend and this result has upset the
apple cart on the goal averages which could be invaluable come the end of
the season.
07/12/08 – Away Hersham Sports Intermediate Charity Cup Rd 1
- Cxxd
14/12/08 – Home Leatherhead – Re arranged fixture

2112/08 – This game versus top of the league
Merton Royals saw Westend field a weakened team due to unavailability of
players against a side that hasn’t been beaten so far this season, despite
this setback they put in an inspired performance and narrowly lost the game by 2 – 1. With
a bit more luck, Westend could have gained at least a draw or even a win
out of the match but in the end had to settle for the loss as time ran out.
Royals scored both of their goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and
the solitary goal from Donaldson in the 2nd half was scant
consolation for the players that had given their all.
04/01/09 – Away Hersham Sports Int Charity Cup Rd 1 – Game
cancelled due to weather
11/01/09 – Home vs Merton Royals – League – Game
cancelled due to weather
18/01/09 – Westend fielded a full strength side
against Hersham Sports in this
Charity Cup game and dominated for
the first 15 minutes, unfortunately this early dominace proved fruitless
and faded into oblivion as they ended up giving away 4 first half penalties
and ended up losing the game by 7 goals to 1. The only bright spot was when
Donaldson netted a consolation goal just near the end of the game.
25/01/09 – Away Dynamo Molesey Intermediate
Challenge Cup 2nd Round. Lost 4-2 with both goals coming from
Robin Tait
01/02/09 – Away Epsom Utd – Game Cancelled
08/02/09 – Home vs Epsom Utd – Game cancelled due
to weather
15/02/09 – Home vs Ewell Lions – Game cancelled by
league
22/02/09 – In a very high scoring game Westend
lost this match by 9 – 5, this was despite a spirited fight back in the
second half. The goal scorers were Donaldson who celebrated with a hat
trick and Jake Saunders who netted twice.
01/03/09 – Westend were beaten 4-0 away to Epsom
United in this Division 2 clash.
08/03/09 – Home vs Leatherhead – Westend produced
their best performance of the season against a high flying Leatherhead team
in a match played on the main pitch at Leatherhead FC. The winning goal was
scored by Nic Donaldson in the second half to earn all 3 points and a
gratifying win.
15/03/09 – Westend fielded an under strength team
against unbeaten top of the league side Merton Royals and were convincingly
beaten by 5 -1 with Westend’s solitary goal coming from Cooper in the
second half.
02/04/09 – Away vs Leatherhead – Lost 4 – 0.
05/04/09 – Home vs Epsom Utd – Lost 4 – 1, scorer Tom Smurthwaite with a fine header in the second
half.
